Embracing T.R.A.S.H Parenting: Surviving the Ungrateful Child Syndrome This Christmas (and Beyond!)
Ho Ho Oh No You Didn’t! 🎄
It's Christmas morning, and there's a symphony of wrapping paper being torn apart, coupled with the not-so-melodious sounds of children groaning, "I wanted the other one!" Ah, the joys of parenting ungrateful little elves during the most wonderful time of the year! But fear not, brave moms, for T.R.A.S.H Parenting, is here to turn your "bah humbug" into a festive "ho ho ho!"
Thoughtfulness: Remember, It's the Thought That Counts
First up in our T.R.A.S.H arsenal is Thoughtfulness. When little Timmy turns up his nose at his new socks, take a deep breath. Remind yourself (and him) that it's the thought that counts. Maybe share a hilarious story about that one time you got a gift that was, well, let's just say "uniquely special." Laughter is a great way to defuse tension and teach gratitude.
Rest: Momma Claus Needs a Break Too
Next, Rest. Yes, you've been up since 4 AM, making sure everything is perfect. But remember, even Santa takes a break (he has the whole January off, after all). Grab a cup of your favorite beverage, lock yourself in the bathroom for five minutes, and just breathe. Your sanity matters!
Accountability: Elf on the Shelf Isn't the Only One Watching
Accountability time! When your kiddos start channeling their inner Grinch, gently remind them that the Elf on the Shelf isn't the only one watching. Encourage them to think about their reactions and what Christmas really means. Who knows, it might just turn into a heartwarming teaching moment (or at least a slightly less noisy one). This isn’t the time for Santa based scare tactics but to share real-life scenarios where being accountable for one’s behavior not only benefits your child but those around them.
Security: Secure in Your Role as Chief Festivity Officer
Security is all about being comfortable in your role as the Chief Festivity Officer. So your gingerbread house looks more like a gingerbread TRAP house? Who cares! You're creating memories (and future "remember when" stories). Embrace the chaos – it's part of the holiday package. And because we love a good acronym here, TRAP can stand for… Trust, Resilience, Authenticity, and Patience… Ok, life lessons!
Happiness: Find Joy in the Madness
Finally, Happiness. Amidst the chaos, find moments of joy. Whether it's the look of genuine surprise on your child's face at a gift they did like or the hilarity of grandpa wearing the new reindeer slippers you got him, there's happiness to be found everywhere. Capture it, cherish it, and share it. We know that parenting can get messy, and that mess sometimes (a lot of time in my home) includes less than pleasant attitudes and time when your little one confirms that more is NEVER enough, but you are equipped for this! All you need, you already have!
So, momma, as you navigate the treacherous waters of ungrateful offspring this Christmas (and beyond), remember the T.R.A.S.H principles. They're not just a lifeline; they're your secret weapon to not just surviving but thriving in the holiday madness. Here's to a Christmas filled with laughter, love, and maybe just a little bit of T.R.A.S.H!
Happy Holidays and Happy Parenting!🎅🏾🧑🏾🎄
